This consultation asks residents and local stakeholders to give your view on whether the Council should allow bike hangars to be installed in Honeywood Road, South Street and Varsity Drive.

Overview

As part of the Council’s commitment to increase levels of cycling in the borough, we provide residents with the opportunity to apply for cycle parking in the form of a bike hangar. Bike hangars offer secure cycle parking for residents in areas where the ability to safely store bikes within a property, or the front/rear garden is limited. The brough currently has 41 bike hangars in the borough, 38 of which are fully subscribed and have a waiting list.

The location of a bike hangars is based on a request from residents. Once a request is received and funding is secured, a feasibility assessment and a site visit is undertaken to ensure that the location is viable and a suitable location is proposed. The proposed location is based on many factors including: parking availability, width of the footway, property frontage (bike hangars will not be placed directly outside a pedestrian access) and the proximity to original request.

The bike hangars are installed and managed by CycleHoop. The Council covers the installation cost of new bike hangar and also provides a 50% subsidy on the cost of renting spaces. The annual rental fee per year is £36 per space, with each hangar providing six bike spaces. Rental spaces are managed by CycleHoop and offered on a "first come first serve basis". If you would like to be placed on the priority list for a space within the proposed hangar, then please state that in your consultation response.

What are we proposing?

The Council would like your opinion on the following proposed bike hangars:

  • Honeywood Road: The proposed location is close to the original requests, but not situated in front of an active frontage to a property. This parking bay is 45m in length and the hangar would be placed at the end of the bay.
  • South Street: The proposed location is close to the original request, but is not situated in front of an active frontage to a property. This parking bay is 47m in length and the hangar would be placed at the end of the bay, still allowing eight cars to park there.
  • Varsity Drive: The proposed location is close to the to the original request.

Plans showing the proposed locations can be seen in the 'Consultation Plan' section on this webpage.
