Why think about the future? To create something new, you have to be able to imagine how things can be different. And the future is a place where everything can be different.

-Jane McGonigal, Author, Game Designer, and Futurist

We are embarking on a journey together, to collectively imagine the future… we are calling this Vision 2050 but it's more than a document - it’s a process of imagining the future we want, together. We're starting a journey and we want you to be part of it.

What is Vision 2050?

We want a vision for the borough for 2050, co-created with a wide range of residents, organisations, businesses, partners and other stakeholders, and based on strong data and expert analysis. It will be our 'North Star' guiding the work we do over the next 25 years.

Why are we doing it?

The present is demanding but if we restrict our thinking and policy making to election cycles, or in-year savings, or immediate crises we fail to work with the complexity of the issues that drive many of our short-term pressures.

For example, we know poorly-paid and insecure work affects individuals and families. We know a globalised world affects businesses and the way our population has changed over time. We know climate change affects the borough through extreme weather events. We know we are getting older as a borough but how do we age well? This is the context within which we live and work and play.

These are complex, wicked issues, and will only be addressed if we take a longer view, considering the potential futures and how we act as good ancestors for a future Hounslow.

What will be happening?

Vision2050 will be co-created with stakeholders and shaped by three areas of work:

  1. Looking forward: using horizon scanning, trend analysis, and scenario planning and round table conversation to discuss potential futures for Hounslow
  2. Imagining Together: Meeting and engaging with residents of all ages to imagine 2050
  3. Preparing people for the future: reflecting on how the Council can steward the future to be a good ancestor for future generations

How can you get involved?

This summer will be full of activities and events for all ages, and we have loads of ways for you join in and help us imagine the future, from writing and design competitions to dragon's den's workshops, arts and crafts sessions, pop-ups and workshops

Check out the events on this page with information on how to get involved.

Please also fill in the quick poll or tell us in the forum about what you think the future might look like...

if you prefer to email us directly, please email taru.jaroszynski@hounslow.hov.uk with your comments

A link to the outcomes will be published here at the end of September next to the Cabinet info on the timeline.
