Consultation has concluded

CGI image of public space at Isleworth station

Background

In 23/24, the council received funding from South Western Railway’s (SWR) Customers and Communities Improvement Fund (CCIF) to undertake feasibility work to improve Brentford and Isleworth station forecourts. The key objectives of the study are to improve accessibility and safety and to create spaces that are welcoming, friendly, and balance the needs of various transport modes and users. We will be looking at street furniture, cycle parking, wayfinding and planting to improve the surrounding public realm.

This builds on recent work at Isleworth station where new lifts were installed to provide step free access to the platforms. It forms part of the council’s ambitious corporate plan for a greener and healthier borough, supporting residents to make healthy travel choices and improving air quality.

Consultation

The council’s transport planning team worked with designers and engineers at Systra to produce concept designs for Brentford and Isleworth respectively. There is a 2D plan and 3D images to help showcase what the space could look like in future. The initial and updated designs can be found on the righthand side of this webpage.

Public consultation took place May - July 2024. Feedback was reviewed and plans were updated based on insights and ideas collected from the community. These have been shared with Network Rail and South West Railway for consideration as the landowners and leaseholders of the stations.

Next Steps

While funding is not currently available to progress plans for Brentford station, there is potential to deliver phased improvements at Isleworth station.

In the short term (1-2 years), priorities include
  • Fencing works parallel to car park
  • Surfacing improvements to create a better walking and wheeling experience (e.g. dropped kerbs and pavements to lifts to be level)
  • Cycle parking improvements
  • Pigeon proofing in and around London Road railway bridge
  • Signage rationalisation
  • Arrangement of disabled bays and drop off facilities to allow for pedestrian priority in the forecourt and convenience nearer lifts

In the medium term (3-5 years), priorities include
  • Greening and biodiversity
  • Artwork
  • Smart totem
  • Seating

In the longer term, ambitions include
  • Add artwork to the railway bridge across London Road
  • Explore restoration of the station building

Please note that timescales are approximate and subject to third party processes, especially as the land in question in not within the council's control. Additionally, SWR is the first train operator to be nationalised and will be undergoing changes which could impact the delivery of this project.
