Hounslow Local Climate Investment
Hounslow to Launch Local Climate Investment — Join Us in Tackling the Climate Emergency Together!
Hounslow Council is excited to announce the upcoming launch of our Local Climate Investment, offering residents, community groups, employees and businesses a unique opportunity to help shape a greener future for our borough. The Initiative will officially launch in June 2025, but you can sign up early to find out the types of green projects that will be supported and how you and your community will benefit.
With contributions starting from just £5, this innovative Initiative aims to raise £5 million over the next five years, allowing the community to actively support local low-carbon projects that will improve lives, reduce emissions, and create a more sustainable Hounslow while earning a return on your investment. From planting trees to expanding renewable energy, and promoting sustainable travel, your involvement can make a difference.
Why Now? Our Commitment to a Greener Future
In 2019, Hounslow declared a climate emergency, and in 2020, we adopted our Climate Emergency Action Plan. This plan commits us to achieving net zero emissions for the council’s own operations by 2030 while working to influence emissions reductions and deliver environment improvements across the wider borough.
The plan outlines bold, transformational programmes to help us achieve our goal, including:
- Supporting businesses and communities to generate renewable energy.
- Promoting sustainable travel like walking, cycling, and public transport.
- Decarbonising our vehicle fleet to reduce pollution.
- Greening the borough with new open spaces and the planting of 22,500 trees—one for every child born in Hounslow.
- Promoting circular economy practices like repairing, sharing, recycling, and repurposing items to reduce waste and carbon emissions.
- Growing the green economy to create jobs, support businesses, and ensure a just transition.
How Does the Local Climate Investment Work?
Hounslow is introducing this new Initiative as a community-driven investment to tackle climate change. The Initiative is designed to support the council’s Climate Emergency Action Plan by delivering projects that reduce our carbon footprint and help our communities and places to become climate resilient.
- Who can invest? Anyone over 18—residents, local businesses, or anyone wanting to contribute to Hounslow’s climate goals—can invest in the Initiative.
- How much can you invest? Investments start at just £5, making it accessible to everyone.
- What will the investment fund? Your money will directly fund local projects, from installing solar panels to creating more (or improving existing) green spaces (see a full list of eligible projects below).
- Is it a safe investment? While the scheme is an investment and not a donation, there are risks, as with any financial product. However, as you are lending money to a council to fund green projects, there is a very low risk on your invested capital.
- What is the return on investment? We anticipate the return on investment (ROI) for the climate initiative to be better than high street bank rates, yet in line with leading cash savings and annuity rates for similar term periods, which typically range from 3.5% to 4.5%. However, the exact ROI will be finalized and announced the day before the initiative’s launch, reflecting the latest market conditions and ensuring an accurate and up-to-date projection
