Consultation has concluded

This consultation closed on 28 April 2024.

In early 2024, we consulted on a proposed new conservation area for the Glebe Estate alongside a draft conservation area appraisal document. The draft appraisal document, which you can access on the right of your screen, describes the character and history of the area and identifies buildings, structures and spaces which make a positive contribution. Should the proposed conservation area be designated, the appraisal will help influence our assessment of future planning applications and guide future development in the area.

The residents who responded were in their opinion on this matter, with two-thirds being against the principle and roughly one-third for the principle. However, the Council has a statutory duty to designate areas of special character and appearance as conservation areas.

Residents’ concerns were carefully considered and it was concluded that designation would not prejudice their quality of life in any event but, ultimately, and rarely, the Council has a duty to designate whatever the opinion. Historic England supported the designation, as did the 20th Century Society and The Victorian Society.

The matter went to Cabinet on September 3rd 2024 and Cabinet gave approval for the designation of the conservation area.

The Cabinet report and Appendices can be found here.

Next steps

Officers are now carrying out the requisite publicity in order to finalise designation.
