Hounslow Council is seeking your views on proposals to improve cycling and pedestrian facilities on Boston Manor Road around its junction with The Ride. We want to hear from local residents and stakeholders. The engagement exercise is open for your views until 25th October 2026.

Overview

We would like to hear your views on proposals to improve cycling and pedestrian facilities on Boston Manor Road, in the area around its junction with The Ride.

A copy of the consultation letter and a plan of the proposals can be accessed using the links on this page.

The proposals include:

  • Upgrading the existing uncontrolled pedestrian crossing to the south of The Ride with a new Toucan crossing. A Toucan crossing is a signal-controlled crossing for both pedestrians and cyclists. It allows people walking, wheeling and cycling to cross safely under signal control.

  • Removing the existing signal-controlled pedestrian crossing north of The Ride.

  • Widening the footway on the southern side of The Ride junction. This additional space would be shared by pedestrians and cyclists approaching and leaving the Toucan crossing.

  • Replacing existing Red Route restrictions with 'No Waiting at Any Time' double yellow line restrictions.

  • 'No Waiting at Any Time' double yellow line restrictions in place of the existing crossing markings and a short section of Red Route Clearway

Why are we proposing this?

The scheme forms part of the Council's commitment to encouraging active travel by making walking and cycling safer, more convenient, and more attractive for residents and visitors.

Surveys conducted show the pedestrian refuge island south of The Ride is well used by pedestrians and meets the required pedestrian demand to justify a new signalised crossing. This island will be maintained and integrated into the proposed new signalised crossing. This location better aligns with established pedestrian desire lines to/from The Ride, including for pupils at Gunnersbury Catholic School, than the existing signalised crossing north of The Ride and more directly serves the bus stops on either side of the road. The crossing is also ideally located to create a direct link for cyclists between The Ride and the two-way cycle track on Boston Manor Road, improving connections between Brentford and South Ealing.

Relocating the signalised crossing allows for pedestrians and cyclists to safely co-exist on a wider shared use footway. If the existing signalised pedestrian crossing were maintained and converted to a Toucan crossing, cyclists and pedestrians would have to negotiate a narrow section of footway around the Bus Stop north of The Ride. Having two signalised crossings so close to each other would negatively impact on traffic movements and so to progress the new crossing the existing one needs to be removed.
