Overview

As part of the council’s commitment to increase levels of cycling in the borough, we provide residents with the opportunity to apply for cycle parking in the form of a bike hangarBike hangars offer secure cycle parking for residents in areas where the ability to safely store bikes within a property, or the front/rear garden is limited. The council current has 23 bike hangars in the borough, 21 of which are fully subscribed and have a waiting list.

The location of a bike hangars is based on a request from residents. Once a request is received and funding is secured, a feasibility assessment and a site visit is undertaken to ensure that the location is viable and a suitable location is proposed. The proposed location is based on many factors including: parking availability, width of the footway, property frontage (bike hangars will not be placed directly outside a pedestrian access) and the proximity to original request.

The bike hangars are installed and managed by CycleHoopThe council covers the installation cost of new bike hangar and also provides a 50% subsidy on the cost of renting spaces. Therefore, the annual rental fee per year is £36 per space, with each hangar providing space for six bikes.

What are we proposing?

The council would like your opinion on the following proposed bike hangars in Chiswick. The locations are listed below and plans can be found on the sidebar under "Consultation Plans":

Flanders Road: This replaces the location that was consulted on in November 2022, this location will not be proceeded with. The proposed location is near to the original request, but is not situated in front of an active frontage to a propertyThis parking bay is 96m in length and the hangar would be placed at the end of the bay, still allowing 21 cars to park there. This minimises the impact on parking in comparison to the bike hangar being placed in a shorter bay.

Oxford Gardens: This replaces the location that was consulted on in October 2022, this location will not be proceeded with. Due to resident feedback about the hangar affecting the cul-de-sac turning, an alternative location was sought. One suggestion was to place the bike hangar on the double yellow lines at the junction with Brooks Road, however, there is an insufficient length of double yellow line to locate the hangar and maintain safety. This parking bay is 46m in length and the hangar would be placed at the end of the bay, still allowing ten cars to park.

Quick Road: A location in Duke Road was considered in October 2022, this location will not be proceeded with. A revised location in Quick Road is proposed to avoid parking pressures on Duke Road. The proposed location requires amendments to the existing single yellow line but will still enable two cars to park in the bay.

Sutherland Road: This replaces the location that was consulted on in October 2022, this location will not be proceeded with. The original location was next to an existing EV charging point therefore an alternative location was sought. The proposed location is within the same bay which is 58m in length, which will still allow 12 cars to park within the bay.
