Vicarage Farm Road - Local Safety and Pedestrian Accessibility Improvements
Consultation has concluded
The London Borough of Hounslow is conducting a public consultation as a segment of our ongoing 3-year Community Led Scheme programme, the aim is to enhance the zebra crossings at 120 Vicarage Farm Road adjacent to Edison Primary School and at 186 Vicarage Farm Road near Springwell Junior School.
Why are we proposing this?
There are safety issues at both zebra crossings that requires attention, and a review of accidents data, revealed accidents in and close by the zebra crossings, involving pedestrian and cyclists in the last five years.
What is the proposed scheme?
- Widening of Eastern Footways: The eastern footways on both zebra crossings are to be widened, to increase space for pedestrians and for the local footpaths to be renewed.
- Speed Reducing Tables: Raised carriageways will be installed at the junctions at Summerhouse Avenue and Vicarage Farm Road. These changes makes it easier to cross the road, along with changes to tactile paving to assist the visually impaired.
- Removal of Pedestrian Guard Railings: The guard railing adjacent to the Edison primary school will be dismantled - to widen the pedestrian space at the zebra crossing, facilitating unobstructed pedestrian movements. For further information on guard railing, please see the 'Removal of pedestrian guard railing - Local transport note' which is found to the right of this page.
- Enhanced Lighting: The zebra crossing by Edison Primary School will benefit from better lighting for increased visibility and safety.
- New Antiskid Surfacing: New friction surfacing will be added to the roads on approach to the zebra crossings to reduce the risk of vehicles skidding in the pedestrian crossing zone.
- Parking: Existing parking arrangements are unaffected by these proposals.
Collectively, these proposals are designed to improve pedestrian safety awareness, encourage safer walking, cycling and active lifestyles for pupils, their parents, and guardians. Additionally, existing parking availability affected.
Details can be found in the sidebar on this page: Plans of proposal.
Positive considerations: -
- Wider pavements ensure safe and unobstructed passage for pedestrians.
- It creates a buffer between pedestrians and vehicular traffics.
- This makes footways more accessible for wheelchair and pushchair users.
- Additionally, wider footway/pavement can enhance the confidence of disable pupil’s using of footways/pavements.
Negative considerations: -
- Slowing down vehicular traffics can lead to localised congestion, an increased pollutants, and may cause traffic to divert to other local routes.
- Large speed tables can incur significant construction costs.
