Windmill Road and Whitestile Road permeable paving
Drainage improvements works are taking place at the junction of Windmill Road and Whitestile Road. The proposal being delivered is in response to frequent flooding in this areaand concerns raised by residents. This area is a low point where surface water collects, and due to the intensity of storms the public sewer network is unable to cope.
After surveying options to reduce flood risk, the proposed solutionisthe installation of permeable paving, which is a form of a Sustainable Urban Drainage System (also known as SuDS).The photo below shows an example of what this feature would look like:
This feature will increase drainage capacity in the public surface water sewer network by providing underground storage that temporarily holds and slowly releases surface water. This will reduce flood risk during heavy rainfall events. As weather patterns change and storms become more intense, there may still be some remaining risk; however, the scheme representsan important step in improving protection for the area.
The locations for the SuDSfeatures are shown in the map below and construction is planned for5 weeks commencingin August 2026. Once complete, there will be no loss of parking bays arising from the permeable paving. There will be some temporary loss of parking bays outside no's 136 to 156, Windmill Road and no. 137 Windmill Road, whilst works are carried out, and our contractor will make every effort to minimise the impact the works will have on residents.Access to properties will be maintained, although there may be some minor delays to facilitate movement of materials and machinery.
