This consultation closed on 6 December 2023 , an update will be available shortly which will summarise the findings and next steps.
Hounslow Council and its health partners would like to ask your views about government proposals to incrementally increase the age that people can buy tobacco products and crack down on youth vaping.
Why are we proposing this?
This consultation asks questions on proposed action to protect future generations from the harms of smoking, by creating the first smokefree generation. It also asks for your views on how new laws would be enforced. This consultation is particularly pertinent in Hounslow as the smoking rate in the borough is currently 16.3%, significantly higher than the 12.9% rate in the UK as a whole.
The consultation asks questions in three areas for which new legislation would be needed, which are:
Creating a smokefree generation: consulting on the smokefree generation policy and its scope.
Tackling youth vaping: consulting on several options to ensure we take the most appropriate and impactful steps, building on England’s analysis of the youth vaping call for evidence.
Enforcement: consulting on the proposal to introduce new powers for local authorities in England and Wales to issue fixed penalty notices to enforce age of sale legislation of tobacco products and vapes.
Paper copies of all consultations and surveys are available. To request one, please email consult@hounslow.gov.uk or call 020 8583 2000.
