Hounslow Council wants your views on proposed improvements for bus journeys and pedestrians on Heston Road, between Fern Lane and Old Cote Drive. This consultation is open for your views until 26 January 2026. We would like to hear from residents the local community, and all other road users.
Overview
The Council is committed to making improvements to bus journeys and reliability across the Borough. Recent traffic studies have noted significant delays to buses in this part of Heston Road, particularly during peak periods. In response to these findings, we have developed plans to create additional space for buses.
What we are proposing?
What are we proposing?
Why are we proposing it?
New southbound “At Any Time” bus lane
To improve bus journey times and reliability. Data shows long delays for buses especially in the morning and evening peak periods. The bus lane will also be available for taxis and cycles, providing benefits for these road users too.
Removal of existing pedestrian refuge islands and small changes to the position of kerbs
To create space for the bus lane. Pedestrian islands are also not appropriate in bus lanes where queuing traffic may reduce visibility of buses when crossing the road
New signalised pedestrian crossing at Wheatlands and Old Cote Drive
To replace refuge islands where surveys shows that they are still required. Signalised crossings also provide more priority for pedestrians than islands, making it easier to cross.
Additional lengths of “At Any Time” double yellow line waiting restrictions
To maintain traffic flow and ensure the bus lane is not blocked by parked vehicles.
New off-peak loading restrictions, operating between 7–10am and 4–7pm Monday-Friday
To ensure that loading does not obstruct the bus lane and other traffic during the busiest times of the day. Loading will continue to be permitted at all other times.
A copy of the proposals and a copy of the consultation letter (including the plan of proposals) can be accessed using the links on this page.
Why are we proposing this?
The proposed scheme aims to improve bus journey times and reliability, whilst maintainingand improving pedestrian crossing facilities. It aims to encourage use of more efficient travel options and reduce barriers to modes of travel to ensure everyone can access the places they need to go.
