What's this about?
Hounslow Council is developing a new All-Age Autism Strategy Plan (in line with the National Autism Strategy) to improve how we support autistic people across the borough — in health, education, work, housing, and community life.
This strategy will be shaped by the people it's designed to support, and overseen by an independent Board including representatives from the autistic community.
Your experiences, insights and suggestions will help us understand what’s working well, and where we need to do better.
To ensure the strategy reflects lived experience and community insight, we have co-produced six focus areas (or subgroups) that address key challenges and opportunities across the borough.
You can help shape the All-Age Autism Strategic Plan in different ways:
by completing the online consultation
joining one of the co-production subgroups
attending an Autism Partnership Board meeting to listen, contribute, or ask questions
Details on all of these are provided below.
What we're working on
We’veestablished six co-produced subgroups:
1. Improving understanding and acceptance of autism within society This includes specific training programmes, public awareness campaigns and education initiatives aimed at increasing autism understanding and acceptance.
2. Improving autistic children and young people’s access to education and supporting positive transitions into adulthood This subgroup is exploring how to better support children and young people through their education journey, with a focus on the critical transition to adulthood.
3. Supporting more autistic people into employment We're developing strategies to work with local employers, increase access to autism-friendly workplaces, and expand specialised employment support.
4. Tackling health and care inequalities for autistic people Areas of docus for this subgroup include improving the diagnostic process for women and children, and reducing health inequalities across all ages.
5. Building the right support in the community and supporting people in inpatient care We are looking at alternatives to hospital detention, reducing crisis events and expanding initiatives like Shared Lives.
6. Improving support within the criminal and youth justice system This subgroup is focused on enabling reasonable adjustments and improving experiences for autistic people in the justice system.
Who can take part in subgroups?
We’re inviting feedback from:
Autistic children, young people and adults
Parents, families and carers
Community organisations and advocacy groups
Education, health, and care professionals
Anyone with interest in the topic
To express your interest in joining any one of the subgroups, please contact Helen Taylor, Head of Service, Learning Disability and Autism - helen.taylor@hounslow.gov.uk
